all graphics are credited accordingly with links to their source! if it doesnt have a link, idk the source.
unless it's a gif! all the gifs of the band were made by me and posted to my tumblr! i also made the phantom power blinkie :3c
hi. i really like the tragically hip. they're a rock n' roll band from kingston, ontario. people tend to say shit like "ohh every canadian knows them" but if i'm gonna be real i didn't know who they were until a few years ago despite being canadian. they're huge here but never really got as big in the states.
this site is currently themed after their album fully completely! it was the first album of theirs i really got insane about.
i'm definitely going to do other themes but i want to add the ability to change between them before i start doing that.
i've currently only heard up to phantom power because i'm working my way through their discography back-to-front. this will get updated as i go.
current favourite song: vapour trails!
all-time favourite song: don't make me choose. maybe the luxury
current favourite album: phantom power
all-time favourite album: also phantom power
i need to bring up the fact that they sell rolling papers on their merch store (king size extra thins too, they know ball) and did a limited run of some designs that they only sold 420 copies of.
one of my favourite parts about their music are the lyrics!!!!! gord downie had such a unique way with words... i like that i have to decipher the meanings of the lyrics, it's interesting learning about parts of canadian history, or politics, or just whatever made him tick. sometimes a song is about a handful of topics or sometimes it's only Vaguely about something. it's neat. second favourite thing are the basslines. gord sinclair the musician that you are.
improv was a huge part of their songwriting process. they'd mess around onstage, dragging three minute songs out to like ten as gord downie monologued or melded songs into each other. it's neat!!!
gord's monologues are really intersting. the most famous of them seems to be the killer whale tank monologue, where gord tells a tale about a job he had before becoming a musician where he was cleaning the walls of the beluga whale tank, and the killer whale ends up tearing his arm off. neato!! anyways here's a link to a neat archived fanpage that'd transcribed several of these monologues...
i've also transcribed a monologue myself! i've been calling it the 'train tracks' monologue. he just kinda talks about tying paul (of whom he calls rock througout this performance) to some train tracks, ends up feeling sorry and tries to untie him but the knots are too tight and the train is too close...
apparently for like a year and a half gord used to tackle the shit out of paul mid song during i'm a werewolf baby. and there's like no footage of it.
this gif here is from no dress rehearsals (here's the clip)
